Escaflowne
Escaflowne
Escaflowne is a complex yet clear story dealing with the themes of love, hope, fate, humanity, and the nature of good and evil. These themes are encapsulated in the struggles of many characters with the Zaibach Empire, the imperialist power bent on domination of Gaia for reason both terrible and understandable. The story begins after a brief prelude on Earth to trigger events with the brutal assault on Fanelia by Zaibach. This leads to a long flight from Zaibach by the heroes during the course of which the lands, nature, and history of Gaia and its relationship with Earth (known as the 'Mystic Moon') are revealed. After a visit to Zaibach itself that reveals another dimension to Escaflowne's world, the opposing forces gather for a climatic confrontation while the heroes (and anti-heroes, such as Folken, Van's brother who is by far the most interesting, important, and complicated character in Escaflowne) wrestle with their duties and desires on the eve of battle. The inevitable war occurs, but nothing about it is inevitable, and fate and love will play their roles in the future of Gaia.
